In a world of mass-produced furniture, there’s something undeniably special about owning a piece that was made just for you. This is what makes custom order furniture so amazing: It is an exclusive collaboration between one of our designers and you.
Whether it’s a dining table that perfectly fits an oddly shaped room, a sofa upholstered in a gorgeous fabric, or a one-of-a-kind credenza built to exact specifications: special-order and custom furniture takes you from “looks nice” to “perfect.”
Why Choose Special-Order or Fully Custom Furniture?
- Perfect Fit – Standard sizes do not always work in older homes, new builds with unique architecture, or rooms that have been reconfigured over the years. A custom piece of furniture lets you dictate every inch.
- The Exact Look You Want – Found the perfect sofa silhouette but need it in performance upholstery because you have kids and a dog? Want a wood finish that matches your 50-year-old paneling? Special order and custom make that possible.
- Higher Quality, Longer Lifespan – Most of the lines we carry build special-order furniture at a very high level of craftsmanship and offer customizable options.
- Investment Value – A well-made custom piece often outlasts trends by decades. Many of our clients end up passing these pieces down to the next generation.

At J Douglas Design, special orders and custom pieces make up a large part of what we do. Here’s everything you need to know before you take the leap.
Getting Started with Custom Furniture
One of the best ways to start the process is to bring images and measurements of your space. When you arrive to the showroom, just ask any of our designers to help you find that perfect piece to customize. We can use your images, and your measurements to help you visualize your design.
Custom Furniture Order Lead Times
Plan ahead: especially if you have a hard move-in date or event. Our exclusive manufacturer partners typically require 8-10 weeks to build your custom piece form the floor up. Then, we can expect delivery time to be around 3-4 weeks. Most custom pieces are ready for delivery to our client’s home in 3 months.
For example, if you are looking to elevate your outdoor s
pace and would like to order outdoor living furniture, you’ll want to start before February to have in time for late Spring, or start of Summer. Similarly, if you’re refreshing your dining room for the holidays, you will want to place your order by late Summer.
Each furniture manufacturer has different lead times and processes, but our design professionals will walk you through it.
